The word "Jinja" was derived from the word "Edinda" as referred by the early local inhabitants of this area, this means "Rocky Place", referring to the many Rocks that existed along the banks of the Nile.
Jinja is a town found in southern Uganda, East of Kampala Capital City, on the shores of Lake Victoria. Jinja is one of the most blessed Towns in Uganda and Africa at large in terms of location.
Many have referred Jinja to be the Havens of Africa due to the many attractions found in this place.
In Jinja, we find the Source of River Nile, Itanda Falls, Bujagali Falls, Owen Falls Dam and Samuka Island on the other side of the town.
There are many activities that take place in this region. Among them are; fishing, bunjee jumping, Birding, horseback ride, whitewater rafting, boat cruise and camping.
The main power generating plant for Uganda is found in this place along River Nile. This has contributed to high level of industrial concentration in Jinja than any other town in Uganda.
At the source of the Nile, Coronation Park has been set up, marked by a garden and a monument honoring British explorer John Speke Hannington for finding and naming the source of River Nile.
Jinja boasts of thousands of tourist that keep visiting the place annually. It's a hub for whitewater rafting in Uganda. Jinja experiences average weather changes throughout the year, this has contributed to high turn up of tourism through out the year.
The Nile is regarded as the Longest River in the world though some sources challenge the statement. The Nile River starts at the Heart of Jinja where it's beauty and majestic flow was discovered by Speke. Birding is one of the many activities that attract hundreds of tourists to Jinja. There is an estimate of 60 species of birds sighted in Jinja, all this are highly sighted along the Nile. The major species of birds along the Nile include; Rock Pratencols, Green Backed Herons, African Open-billed Storks, Giant Kingfisher and Great Blue Turacos.
